In keeping with the mission of the Junior League, each year the incoming group of members takes on a project that benefits the community by contributing to the welfare of the women and children of McLennan County. One project selected by the Provisional class involved renovating the toddler classroom at Compassion Ministries, a local organization that provides transitional housing for homeless women and families. This classroom is used by toddlers while their parents are learning to get back on their feet, and is used to help tutor those children whose advancement has been hindered by their situations. At first glance, the classroom was a blank canvas of bare walls and a few toys and books scattered around. The Provisional members knew the room had potential and knew the classroom could be transformed into a haven for the children living there. The goal was to make it a place where the toddlers could play and relax in an educational setting. The room now boasts an inspiring wall mural painted by local artist Debbie Unger, a comfortable reading nook, dress-up area, creative learning center with educational games and DVDs, new table and chairs, and many games and toys to ignite the imaginations of these young children. The project had limited resources available, so it was due to the time and physical labor provided by the Provisional members and the donations given by community partners, McCoy’s Building Supply, ACSI Home Theater, Debbie Unger, and Jill McCall at Compassion Ministries, that made this project such a success.
